Lubricants — which one suits you?

Water-, silicone-, or hybrid-based? We explain the differences between lubricants and help you find the product that suits your needs.

What to consider

Read the ingredients and instructions of the specific product. A “water-based” or “silicone-based” label does not answer every compatibility question. Check compatibility with your chosen condom or other item against both manufacturers’ instructions. Do not assume all products in one category are interchangeable. Stop using a product if discomfort or irritation occurs.

How bases differ

Water-based products may need more frequent reapplication, while silicone-based ones may last longer. A hybrid’s properties depend on its particular formula. A category name and packaging colour do not fully explain suitability.

Compatibility is product-specific

Read the instructions for both the lubricant and condom or accessory. Oil-based substances can weaken latex condoms. With silicone accessories, check which products their manufacturer permits. If the two sets of instructions leave compatibility unclear, ask the seller or manufacturer.

Ingredients and personal comfort

Scent, flavour or a special effect do not automatically improve a product. Read ingredients and consider known irritants. Stop using a product if it feels uncomfortable instead of adding another to hide a symptom.

Storage and limitations

Check expiry, instructions after opening and storage conditions. Use the product only for its stated purpose. Lubricant does not replace contraception or protection against infections. Seek professional advice if irritation or soreness persists.

Compare packaging and application

Alongside the formulation, consider the container, quantity and dispensing method. A large bottle is not always more convenient: check whether you will use it within the stated period after opening. The pump, cap and bottle shape affect control over the amount and keeping the product clean. Read the complete ingredients and intended use before buying, rather than relying on the largest claim on the label. Fragranced, warming or cooling products require particular attention to instructions and skin sensitivity. A straightforward formulation with suitable compatibility is often a more useful starting point than a collection of unusual effects.

Distinguish occasional discomfort from a recurring problem

Stop using a product if it causes burning, irritation or unpleasant sensations, and follow its instructions. Do not try to solve the problem by mixing several products or increasing the amount. Recurrent dryness, pain or unusual discharge warrants a discussion with a healthcare professional rather than endlessly changing bottles. Mention the product used, when symptoms began and any other care changes. Lubricant can help reduce friction when used appropriately, but it does not treat every cause of discomfort, replace contraception or provide protection against infections on its own.
