Using a condom: the small checks that matter

Before opening

Check the expiry date and intact packaging. Keep condoms away from heat and repeated friction. Replace a product kept in a wallet for a long time or in damaged packaging. Instructions and material information should be readable.

From the start

Apply an external condom before genital contact. Open with fingers, not teeth or sharp objects. Squeeze air out of the tip and unroll according to the instructions. If you start putting it on the wrong way round, use a new condom.

One at a time

Do not use two external condoms or an external and internal condom together. Use a new one for each encounter. Stop if it breaks or slips; replacing it does not remove the risk of contact that already occurred.

After use

Hold the base during withdrawal to prevent slipping. Put used condoms in the bin, not the toilet. If unsure, ask a pharmacist or clinician about emergency contraception and infection testing.

Read the instructions before you are rushed

Products may differ in material, shape and compatibility limits. Find a clear guide before use and check that it describes your actual model. If instructions are unclear, ask a professional or manufacturer. Do not automatically transfer a familiar method to another type. Have a new intact product and suitable lubricant available beforehand. Preparation reduces avoidable mistakes caused by rushing, but it is not a promise that every risk will disappear.

Check the wrapper and storage conditions

Expiry matters for each individual item, not only a box you recently bought. Inspect wrapper integrity and signs of poor storage. Do not leave supplies near a heater, in a vehicle or where packaging repeatedly rubs. Sharp objects used to open it can damage the contents. An uncertain item should not be used to save money. A soft or natural label does not confirm compatibility with the material; specific packaging information is needed.

Know what to do after an error

When integrity or correct application is uncertain, do not continue with the same product or reuse it. Damage during contact calls for timely advice about pregnancy and infection risks. Review preparation and storage separately after taking necessary action. Blaming yourself or a partner should not replace getting help. Understand disposal and the requirement for a new item each time in advance. Clear instructions and compatibility matter more than an advertised promise of reliability.
